Filing cabinets are one of the few pieces of office furniture where the wrong choice shows up daily. Get the format right and filing takes seconds; get it wrong and every letter-size folder sits at an angle.

Lateral filing

Lateral cabinets file front to back across a wide drawer, which means they take letter and legal without reconfiguring anything. Ours are typically 34" wide, 22" deep and 29" high, with a lock and two keys, on full-extension ball bearing slides so the back of the drawer is reachable.

The 29" height is deliberate. It matches desk height, so a lateral file can butt against the end of a desk and act as extra surface rather than standing on its own.

Mobile pedestals

A mobile pedestal is a box and file drawer unit on casters that rolls under a desk and out again. Useful where the desk has no pedestals of its own, or where someone needs their files to move with them. Some models take a cushion top and double as occasional seating.

Credenzas with filing built in

If you need volume rather than a single cabinet, a credenza with lateral file drawers gives you a full run of filing at desk height behind the desk. Four drawers of lateral filing holds considerably more than two standalone cabinets and takes up one wall instead of two corners.

Locks

Every locking cabinet ships with two keys. If a cabinet will hold personnel files, contracts or anything a client would expect to be secured, check the lock is specified before ordering rather than after.
